Bears Shoot Down Wiesbaden Flyers Twice in Road Exhibition Doubleheader

The Berlin Bears traveled to Wiesbaden last week, and humbled the Flyers, currently on top of the USAFE Germany Sports Conference, 12-6 and 6-5 in an exhibition doubleheader. Earlier in the season the Bears downed the flyers thrice, 7-6, 11-3, and 4-3, before they lost 4-1 to their Air Force foes. The two latest victories were recorded by pitchers Denny Cowart and Ron Yarbough. Julie Henderson was the big stick for the Berlin nine in the opening contest. He connected for three his, one of them his first grand-slam homer of the year. George Geiger also tallied three hits for the victors. Although both games went for only seven innings, both sides seemed to have hot bats. Tonight the Bears leave Berlin for Kitzingen, were they will play a weekend series with the Kolts, champions of the Marne League. These two teams have not met previously this season, but they may clash in the USAREUR playoff, which begin August 16. The Bears will square off against the 2nd Brigade team of the 3rd Armored division League Friday August 16, in Frankfurt. The team returns to Berlin for the second game of the opening round Sunday. If a third game is required, it will be played as the second game of a doubleheader, Sunday. The Bears, who finished fourth in the COMZ League, are still entitled to participate in the USAREUR playoffs because of Berlin’s unique status as a separate command.
